The plight of Jews in the Soviet Union was a key focus of campaigning groups amongst Scotland's Jews. Organisations such as the Scottish Campaign for Soviet Jewry, the Glasgow Committee for Soviet Jewry and the 35's Women's Soviet Campaign helped raise awareness through protests, letter-writing, and public meetings, often involving politicians, civic leaders and former refuseniks. Scottish actor Ida Schuster was an active campaigner, and the cause also attracted the attention of several prominent church representatives. Glasgow Jewish students and youth took part in demonstrations and write-ins, and many Scottish Jews corresponded regularly with refuseniks in the Soviet Union.
